You should do what you can and not thinking about the outcome. You never know where life goes, you never know where life will take you. I went to Australia in 1999, I wasn’t even the vice-captain. Sachin (Tendulkar) was the captain and in three months I became the captain of India.

When I announced my decision to retire, Sachin came up to me and asked me ‘Why have you taken such a decision?’ I said I’ve had enough, I don’t want to play anymore. He told me ‘This was the best I have seen you play in the last three years’. In life when you get tested, when you get rejected by everyone and when you get pushed aside, you actually get the best out of it. That has been a learning curve for me
He was special even at that age. He was a thin boy, but very observant. His power of observation was excellent. He did not play any matches that season but he was happy to bat in the nets and being part of the Mumbai team. (As per Suru Nayak)
He was a very shy boy of around 15. I was the senior most member of the team and the management thought it would be good for a newcomer to share the room with a senior player. Skipper Chandrakant Pandit told me to keep a watch on the young man.
Surprisingly Anjali was not able to recognize Sachin when they first spotted each other at the Mumbai International airport in 1990. This was despite the fact that Sachin had already achieved much fame, even though his international cricket career had not yet started. Anjali was present at the airport to receive her mother, when Sachin arrived with the Indian Cricket Team after scoring his maiden test. After this they courted each other for the next five years, before they got married in 1995.
