I have always been a Congressman and then I was invited to join the Party and play an active part and the invitation came from Madam (Sonia) Gandhi herself. I had no choice. I just said ‘Yes’ and followed whatever the Party asked me to do. I was given a chance to work for the party whose policies I always believed in. What more could I ask for if I had to take to politics seriously?

My happiest moment was when my brother Raj Kapoor beat me up and then felt bad and took me to a Chinese restaurant for lunch. It happened twice-once when I gave a gaali (abuse) to my mother and the second time when I burst firecrackers on the staircase when he (Raj) was sleeping after shooting all night for Barsaat.
Amitabh Bachchan was born in Allahabad. His father Harivansh Rai Srivastava (Bachchan) was a well-known poet. Bachchan was initially named Inquilaab, inspired by the phrase Inquilab Zindabad popularly used during the Indian independence struggle. However, at the suggestion of fellow poet Sumitranandan Pant, Harivansh Rai changed the boy’s name to Amitabh, which, according to a newspaper article, means “the light that will never die.”. Although his surname was Shrivastava, Amitabh’s father had adopted the pen name Bachchan (“child-like”), under which he published all of his works. It is with this last name that Amitabh debuted in films and for all other practical purposes, Bachchan has become the surname for all of his immediate family.
