Arnab Goswami was born in Guwahati, Assam. His paternal grandfather was a lawyer, a Congress leader and an independence activist. His maternal grandfather was a Communist and leader of the opposition in Assam for many years. Arnab Goswami’s father Colonel (Retd.) Manoranjan Goswami has been a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and contested the 1998 Lok Sabha Polls as the BJP candidate for the Guwahati to Lok Sabha of Assam where he was defeated by Congress candidate. His maternal uncle, Siddhartha Bhattacharya, a BJP MLA from Gauhati East constituency, was the head of the Assam unit of the party before Sarbananda Sonowal took over in 2015. As an army officer’s son, he attended schools in various cities.

Salma Sultan is famous Indian television journalist who worked as a news anchor in Doordarshan, and later worked as director. She worked as an anchor in Doordarshan for three decades. Salma had initiated a trend-wearing a signature rose tucked under her left ear in her hair, and draping the border of her sari around her neck in a modern yet traditional way. It was later picked up by almost all the women newsreaders. People really admired news readers during Doordarshan era.
