Story – Why Manna Dey was not interested to be a classical singer

My uncle [K.C. Dey] wanted me to be involved fully in classical music. I was really not interested. Classical music appeals to only a class of audience and it is very difficult to reach out to the masses. Music based on pure ragas and bandishes has limitations.

Story – This is how Prabodhchandra became Manna Dey

Prabodhchandra was the real name given to me by my father Purnachandra Dey but I never ever liked it. ‘Manna’ was my nickname and my uncle and Guru- K.C. Dey, (the great blind singer of Bengal) always used to call me by that name. Somehow I liked that name and changed it officially when I reached college!
