JRD never hankered after any sort of government recognition. When he was sounded out for the Bharat Ratna award in January 1992, he asked me to “please tell the Prime Minister’s Office [PMO] that I am not interested in the award.” I did nothing of the sort, but I did send a quiet message to the PMO: “Please approach JRD with discretion and finesse.” Finally, he did accept the award and was decorated by President Shankar Dayal Sharma at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
